More than 17 million people have filed for unemployment in the past four weeks as the novel coronavirus
continues to drive the U.S. economy into recession. That means that
millions are or soon will be without health insurance, and millions more
will struggle to pay premiums and co-pays on insurance they do have.
This puts even more pressure on hospital systems — already under
enormous financial strain — because they are required to treat all
patients with emergency conditions, including the uninsured.
